The CS4Women project is an European initiative to analyze the implication of women in ICT (Information and Communication Technology) with more specific reference to Computer Science (CS). With the cooperation of companies and public institutions CS4Women promotes activities for the dissemination and diffusion of Computer Science to increase the interest and participation of European girls
To achieve this general aim, the CS4Women project addresses the following sub-targets:
- To analyse why there are so few girls that choose Computer Science degrees in Europe. In this respect, two important questions need to be answered: The reasons why many girls do not choose them and the reasons why some girls chose them.
- To spread the idea that CS is a girl thing!. The idea is to promote Computer Science degrees among women via three channels: To young girls; To society in general, including family; To research ICT environment
- To engage big and small companies and public governments in the goal of increasing the number of girls in CS. This area needs women. It’s a responsibility that involves all kind of institutions: educative, public, private, research and individuals and the cooperation among them is crucial in the achievement of the mentioned aim.
- To promote initiatives to make a change in the representation of science to society, on how the science is perceived by women and men. There is a popular, very extended tendency to see ICT expert, as mainly men and label as “freaks”. Offering new profiles of scientist, including women models will attract more women into CS studies.
