NDT (Navigational Development Techniques), is an approach focused on the Model-Driven Engineering paradigm. Initially, NDT was focused on the requirements and analysis phases of MDE. However, NDT has evolved and now covers the complete life cycle of software development. Currently, NDT covers six groups of processes that are defined in detail in NDTQ-Framework: development, maintenance, quality assurance, management, testing and security.
In 2004, NDT was proposed as a methodology to capture and analyse requirements in Web systems. The methodology defines a set of metamodelos for the requirements and analysis phases and a set of transformations of rules that let derive analysis models from requirements ones. In order to represent this metamodels, NDT proposes a set of concrete syntax based on formal extensions of REM patterns and UWE web models. In the latest months, NDT has been enriched to include a tool named NDT-Tool, which covers the requirements and analysis phases and implements the NDT models transformations.
However, NDT has evolved to also include some new standards and henceforth the so-called MOF metamodels. Its transformations, initially defined with OCL, are now defined using QVT. This evolution, some set of UML-profiles let the use of UML tool based. Nowadays, there is a suite available, NDT-Suite, which uses these profiles to adapt Enterprise Architect to use NDT.
Furthermore, using the powers of the unions and connections of metamodels, NDT has been extended in order to be adapted into the enterprise environment. For instance, in the paper NDT & METRICA V3. Today, NDT is being used in several real projects and grows to be involved in several new aspects such as early testing or software quality.
